Club.

The beach. The lake. The porch. The cottage.

The best part of The Coaching Habit? Turns out it’s other people.

A note from MBS

The Coaching Habit is a short book. You can read it in an afternoon. Which makes it, I think, a perfect summer book, not because it’s light, but because it gives you room to actually think.

Reading it somewhere beautiful helps. Something about being away from your desk makes the questions land differently. You notice things you’d skip past in a meeting room. Read it slowly. Underline things. Then lend it to someone you came with or give them a copy and make a plan to chat.

What this looks like

1

Bring a copy

Pack it like you mean it. The paperback is small. The audiobook works well on a long drive.

2

Read it at your own pace

On the beach, by the lake, on the porch. No pressure.

3

Find your reading partner(s)

Someone who’s also read it, or is reading it at the same time. One other person is enough, but the more, the better.

4

Have the conversation

One long one, or a few short ones. The questions in this guide work anywhere.

How you’ll run it

One Shot

Everyone reads the book first, then 60–90 minutes together on the questions.

Three Shots

Better for going deeper. Take the extra time together to pick one or two of the Seven Essential Questions and start practicing.

Questions worth staying with

On space and perspective

Is there a challenge you’ve been trying to solve that looks different when you’re away from it?

On the people you left behind

Is there someone at work or at home whose real challenge you might have been missing?

The Coaching Habit tends to make you think about specific people. Name one.

On the seven questions

Which question would you most want to use when you get back? Which one are you dreading trying?

Just for fun

What’s one of the best questions anyone has ever asked you, and where were you when they asked it?

To close — Question 7

What was most useful for you?

Take your time with this one. You’re not in a meeting.

What was most useful for you?

That’s Question 7 and it’s the inspiration for your submission. When your group finishes, your group’s organizer submits something you found useful, from the book, the experience, the time together, whatever your group decides. Include a photo or video from your club with your submission. A screenshot of a video call counts. A picture of your text thread counts.

Winners are selected every two months. Cycle 1 closes August 19. Cycle 2 closes October 5. Cycle 3 closes December 31, 2026.
